Governor Davis has just recently signed into law, Assembly Bill 88, which established parity for mental health coverage in California. It was especially gratifying to see anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa included in the list of identified mental illnesses.

California residents: please read the following letter and email the letter to Governor Davis, applauding this action, and urging the need for increasing budget revenues allocated to eating disorders and other mental illnesses.

Governor Gray Davis
State Capitol Building
Sacramento CA 95814

Dear Governor Davis,

As a resident of the state of California and a person who has first-hand knowledge of the devastation wrought by eating disorders, I would first like to express my thanks for your support for, and the signing into law of, Assembly Bill 88, which established parity for mental health coverage in California. It was especially gratifying to see anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa included in the list of identified mental illnesses. You are to be congratulated for your recognition of the dire need to rectify the inadequate coverage for mental health in our state.

Mental illness affects very large numbers of people in California. Eating disorders specifically result in psychological devastation and pain coupled with danger medical complications and, in some cases death. Death and disability rates for eating disorders are among the highest of all mental illnesses. But with early detection, intervention, adequate treatment and ongoing research, eating disorders and other mental illnesses can be cured. Money for this purpose, unfortunately, is sorely lacking. For these reasons, I urge you to maintain and allocate all budgeted funds for mental health.

PLEASE DO NOT CUT ANY MENTAL HEATH FUNDS FROM THE BUDGET!!

Thank you for your continued support for vital mental health issues.

Sincerely,

(your name)
